How it works

Why the same salary pays differently

An annual figure divided by 2,080 hours (52 weeks × 40 hours) is the standard U.S. full-time approximation. But three things make your actual hourly rate diverge from this number:

Paid time off — if you receive 10 vacation days and 5 sick days, you are paid for 2,000 hours of work but receive a salary covering 2,080. Your effective hourly wage is higher than annual ÷ 2080.

Benefits and employer contributions — health insurance, retirement matching, and payroll taxes (e.g. FICA in the U.S.) can add 20–30% on top of gross salary. Total compensation ≠ gross pay.

Taxes — income tax and social security are withheld before money reaches your account. Two employees with identical gross salaries can have very different net pay depending on filing status, location, and pre-tax deductions.

  • Standard U.S. full-time year ≈ 2,080 paid hours (52 × 40)
  • Part-year or contract work: divide by the weeks you actually worked, not 52
  • Always compare job offers on total compensation, not gross salary alone

How this is calculated

Formula:
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (weeks worked per year × hours per week). Monthly = annual ÷ 12. Weekly = annual ÷ weeks. Daily = annual ÷ (weeks × days per week).
Applies to:
Gross (pre-tax) salary conversions; tax treatment varies by jurisdiction.

These conversions are arithmetic only — they use the schedule you enter and apply no taxes, deductions, benefits, or overtime. Real take-home pay depends on income tax, social security, retirement contributions, and benefits in your jurisdiction. For reference only; not financial, tax, or payroll advice.
