How it works
What real travel budgets miss
Most trip budgets under-count three categories: Transport — not just flights but airport transfers, taxis, ride-shares, rental car + fuel + tolls + parking, and intercity trains. Local transit alone can rival the hotel bill in some cities. Food and drink — restaurants are the visible cost; the invisible ones are coffee, snacks, water, alcohol, and the premium you pay for eating near tourist sites. Buffer — luggage fees, visa fees, travel insurance, tips, ATM and card-currency-conversion fees, and the inevitable souvenir. A 10–15% contingency on the total is the realistic minimum.
- Per-day averaging smooths over expensive travel days (long flights) and cheap in-place days
- Per-person cost exposes who is subsidizing whom when shared lodging is split
- Card foreign-transaction fees and ATM withdrawal fees are routinely forgotten
How this is calculated
- Formula:
- Total trip cost = Σ all category costs (lodging + transport + food + activities + misc). Per-person = total ÷ travelers. Per-day = total ÷ (travelers × days).
